(Miami) - Major League Baseball's Florida Marlins received a fine from often-criticized
commisioner Bud Selig this week.
A few weeks ago, the Marlins fired manager Jeff Torborg as a scapegoat for the
team's poor performance. Team officials immediately hired Jack McKeon to replace
Torborg, having had McKeon on their collective mind for some time.
The fine was a penalty for not interviewing any minority candidates before signing
McKeon. It was not directly confirmed by Selig, but instead issued by an official
who wanted to remain anonymous.
Ryan's Opinion: If you are a minority, or someone who is just a cry baby
who is easily offended, then click here before you
start hating me.
The reason I finally wrote something for the site after 6 months is because this
infuriates me so much. What if they had hired a black guy without interviewing
any caucasians? Is that any better? They knew they wanted McKeon when Torborg
was fired, so why waste valuable time interviewing people they know they won't
hire?
I am not racist in anyway. But seriously, this affirmative action stuff is going too far. Ok, so "Whitey"
committed some disgustingly heinous crimes in the 17th-19th centuries, 20th to a
lesser extent. Forcing the Africans into slavery is right up there with the actions
of Adolph Hitler, Slobodan Milosevic, and the guy who made Transformers: Armada.
But two wrongs don't make a right. I don't care how many times you fine the Florida
Marlins, or allow a minority into a college as opposed to a more qualified
majority, it's not going to erase those crimes. Thomas Jefferson wrote that all
men are created equal. This sure doesn't look like equality to me. The Marlins
should be able to hire whoever the heck they want.
This is supposed to be the land of the free. I think it's time we start acting like it.
