No More Stinking Up Buses in Oregon Town

January 27, 2003 4:07 PM EST

Officals in Bent, Oregon have proposed a city ordinance banning noxious and offensive odors on public buses. More specifically, they have banned spitting, smoking, skateboarding, defecating, and general stinking on all city public transit.

To quote the ordinance, anyone who "emanates a grossly repulsive odor that is unavoidable by other Bend Extended Area Transit customers" is not allowed to make use of any city public transportation.

City attorney Jim Forbes justified the situation, saying the proposal is "an effort to keep the riding experience as pleasant and safe as possible." He also pointed out that there is already a city law prohibiting citizens from releasing "highly objectionable odors" from their property.

Ryan's Opinion: This is an outrage. It's my right as an American citizen to be able to defecate where I want, when I want. Moreover, if I want to skateboard on a public bus, then everyone has to either let me do it or sacrifice their citizenship, because stopping me from doing so is limiting my basic freedoms.

It's a sad day when a human need such as stinking up public buses and releasing objectionable odors from his or her home is crushed by an oppressive government. I decided to consult cartoonist and fellow loser Richi on the subject, knowing that he is an expert on the subject of offensive odors.

"I am truely outraged at this! I have the right to make my trousers cough whenever, where ever I want! That right is as innaliable as the right to vote!"

I totally agree with Richard. Before we know it, they're going to strip us of our right to bear arms and the right to throw stuff off tall buildings. Isn't this the land of the free? It's sickening. Truly Sickening.
